How come they don’t make all windshields out of ¼“ polycarbonate plastic? ?

It's 10 times more impact resistant than tempered glass! Almost everyone I see has a chipped or cracked windshield it's so common that the cops don't even say anything about your windshield being cracked... they say it's the winter sand & graveling that's used on the roads that's the main culprit. So why don't they use polycarbonate and end all this crap? I mean... windshields are not cheap!

Poly has some issues vs. glass

1) Its very soft compared to glass, so it will scratch much easier and become "hazed" pretty quickly. Glass is as hard as most windblown dust (sand), plastic is much softer.

2) That thickness of poly is not as rigid as glass, you might have issues with deformation during high speed driving (wind) and impacts (rocks)

3) Plastics tend to have issues a both low temp (embrittle) and high (soften, deform). You need something that can take -50 F to + 150 F to be usable in a car, both woudl be a real problem for this material in such a large, unsupported application

4) Safety - one reason side and back windows are tempered is that they tend to break out completely in a crash, making escape paths. Poly would not do this and could trap a person in a vehicle

5) Chemical resist - not many things attack glasses (HF does), but more things react with poly, like oil based things (gas, oil, diesel....), which would corrode the window and make it fail
