How to check a second hand Eheim filter?

I have a 170L aquarium with overhead filter. Looking for an external filter. Read some forums and found Eheim is the best in the market but its expensive.
I found a second hand Eheim 2224 for $ 80 and looks like reasonable. I am going to check the filter tomorrow.
I don't have any idea of external filters. How can I check the fiter. will you be able to suggest how to check the parts and functionality.
Which parts I have to concentrate. Which parts tend to fail easily so that I have to focus on it. If an expensive part is going to fail then I can think about saving money and buying a new one. Please advise.
