Can you use a reptile sponge filter for fish?

I have guppy and molly fry and i want to know if a filter for a reptile tank will work? Does it need carbon too?

If your filter is one that treats the water then that should be fine. My only cautions would be the possible transfer of disease to your fish (unpredictable) and ensuring the flow rate through the filter isn't so strong as to trap the fry. You could put an additional fine mesh shield around the filter if that's the case. If it is the simple type like a J shape that operates by air with a foam block then flow rate would not be an issue in respect of fry safety.

Carbon is never a bad thing to have in your filter unless you are using disease treatments. A lot of treatments are stripped from the water by carbon.
