Here are some more information for Malacetic Shampoo:
My Bulldog has allergies. How can I help him?
My bulldog has had allergies since he was a puppy. Initially, we took him to the vet, and they suggested a better food. That helped drastically (less scratching and no more flaking!) However, my vet says my bulldog still just has allergies from grass, etc. (His paws get very itchy during the summer). How can I help my bulldog's allergies? Any OTC treatments? Shampoo?
His ears and wrinkles also get very dirty and smelly. I frequently clean them, but our vet says that he seems to suffer from yeast infections and gave us malacetic otic. Any other good wrinkle and ear cleaners? Specifically for yeast?
If your vet has not already done so, an allergy test or referral to a veterinary dermatologist would help a lot. Dogs under 5 years old are 85-90% likely to respond very well to hyposensitization - allergy shots just like people get - where they find out what he is allergic to and develop a serum that is injected in slowly increasing doses several times a week. I have had some pretty dramatic results with this - it is a lifelong thing - and it really improves their quality of life, reduces itching and reduces secondary infections associated with the allergy. My favorite thing for Bulldog folds is Malaseb Pledgets or the Banfield Hospitals in the Petsmart stores have one called F3/W wipes which are the same thing. They both have medicine to treat and prevent yeast and bacteria in the folds. If the diet change helped a lot, consider a hypoallergenic diet trial (talk to your vet about this) which would help rule out food allergy as one of the causes of the itching. Over the counter diets cannot be truly hypoallergenic because they use the same mixer to prepare several different diets with different ingredients. If you can clear up the ear infection, you can clean once or twice a week, dry well and use 2 drops of Swim Ear or Auro-Dri (which is a drop you can find in the pharmacy near the ear plugs) to help keep the ear canal dry. If the ear problems keep coming back over and over, which they will, really consider the allergy shots and the food trial. A cheap therapy for the paws is Selsun Blue shampoo which is a dandruff shampoo for people. The ones at the vet are stronger, but allergic skin disease is a real money pit so it could help you out a little. I recommend shampoo just the feet (base of the nails, between toes and paw pads undereneath), let it sit 5 min. and rinse. Do this twice weekly for 1 month, then once weekly. Not only will you be washing off the allergen that he is sensitive to, you will be treating the yeast and bacteria that builds up. Either way, he may have to be on low dose steroids for life. Good luck to you - Bulldogs are really cute but really have trouble with that skin!
