Are You Thinking About Buying A UV Air Purifier?
UV also known as Ultra Violet, works by using radiation. Sounds odd right? Well, in a way I suppose it is. But note this, the same radiation that kills germs, pollen, bacteria, smoke, is not the same kind of radiation that will hurt you. It's a smaller, controlled "substance" which allows the "germs" to flow into the air purifier and get zapped with the UV ray light. These UV rays won't even irritate your skin or anything like that. The UV light tube is specifically made to be used only for destroying the germs in and around your home.
Most of these purifiers are quite small, they will clean either one to two rooms or one floor of your residence. However, I have seen a few on the market that purify the air in you entire home. These units are a little smaller than an air conditioner you place in your window and definitely not as bulky. I like the UV purifiers because they always get rated really highly by people, but they won't cost you an arm and a leg. This is one of the most important aspect for me. I'm completely willing to pay a few hundred for something that will help me, but for me, the product has to have gotten some good reviews from the consumers. It's a good idea in general to always look for reviews on products before buying anything online or off!
One of my favorite Ultra Violet air purifiers is the Sharper Image SI830 UV Ionic Air Purifier. It costs about $150 but again, it was well worth it. Personally I love anything Sharper Image, and anything I have ever bought that was Sharper Image has always been of high quality! This machine is designed to reduce germs in the air, to do this, it features a built in Philips Germicidal UV-C Sterilamp! Here are a few specs included in this incredible machine:
- Next-generation Ionic Breeze has a stronger electrostatic field and 3 charged collection blades separated by 2 driver blades, improving its particle capture rate
- Ionic Breeze technology moves air silently, without the annoying noise of a fan
- Dual-purpose air purifier reduces bacteria, mold spores and viruses in the air it cleans, using germ-killing UV-C light
- Only 13 watts to run 24/7 (plus 15W Sterilamp) and no filters to replace means you save money
- Ozone-Guard on front grill converts by-product ozone to oxygen.
- Includes Philips UV-C Germicidal Sterilamp with 8,000-hour effective life
- Dual-purpose air purifier reduces bacteria, mold spores and viruses in the air it cleans, using germ-killing UV-C light.

How long does it take for Germicidal UV-C lamp to kill germs (I have a 36 watt light)?
Do the UV-C lights in my furnace actually work at killing germs/bacteria or are they like most things, to good to be true and cost big $. I know that UV-C does actually kill germs but its not instantly in most cases. I'm trying to figure out if the air in an air duct passing by the light would actually be enough time to really kill germs. Any educated input on the matter would be appreciated.
Different germs required different amounts of time under the light. For example, some viruses can be killed after only a few seconds or minutes, while most bacteria require at least 20 minutes to kill.
The air in a duct passing under the light (if the air is constantly moving) would kill some germs, but not most.
I work in a microbiology lab, and we leave the UV light on for at least 20 minutes when we want to decontaminate something.
I would not spend a bunch of money on such a light for my home, just get a really good filter instead. Additionally, most of the germs in your home that would make you sick will be found on surfaces (door knobs, light switches, etc), unless someone in the house currently has a respiratory infection (including the common cold).
